Mystery/Crime novels are not normally my favorite, mostly because of the “who done it” aspect of the novels. I feel like very few authors are able to keep the story in line without giving it away. The Fourth Monkey by J.D. Barker isn’t that kind of novel. You know who did it from the start and it’s all chill and thrill from that point on.
This novel has been on my TBR list for a while now. I fell in love with Barker’s storytelling skills back in 2015 when I read and reviewed the first book in the Shadow Cove Saga, Forsaken. Barker has a way of writing both characters and a story that grabs ahold of you and won’t let up. His characters are always well-written, developed, and relatable. In this series, even 4MK, the foe, will make you feel a variety of emotions. I loved that.
The Fourth Monkey is a solid, fluid story from beginning to end. It’s hard to put down, easy to read, and highly entertaining. I have the second book in the queue to read. I’ve read the first chapter and I am so excited to venture more into the detective world of Porter, Nash, and their team.

Thriller, Mystery, Crime
For over five years, the Four Monkey Killer has terrorized the residents of Chicago. When his body is found, the police quickly realize he was on his way to deliver one final message, one which proves he has taken another victim who may still be alive.
As the lead investigator on the 4MK task force, Detective Sam Porter knows even in death, the killer is far from finished. When he discovers a personal diary in the jacket pocket of the body, Porter finds himself caught up in the mind of a psychopath, unraveling a twisted history in hopes of finding one last girl, all while struggling with personal demons of his own.
With only a handful of clues, the elusive killer’s identity remains a mystery. Time is running out and the Four Monkey Killer taunts from beyond the grave in this masterfully written fast-paced thriller.
